Yank Sized Portions

Three of our grandchildren and their parents recently arrived for a holiday with us and this was one of the first places they wanted to visit again (see my last years review).

At first sight the prices appear quite high but, believe me, the portion sizes are large - quite possibly too large. Trust me, unless you are a huge eater do not order a starter AND a main course.

Thinking it would be a good idea to JUST have a starter I decided to have the Sample Platter - a supposedly smaller plate of Creamy Spinach & Artichoke Dip, Coconut Shrimp with a Sweet Chilli Dip, Avocado & Shrimp Spring roll and Buffalo Chicken Wings. Bad idea - I couldn't finish it! The other adults had the Blue Burger, the Philly Cheese Steak and the Chicken Sizzling Fajitas whilst the children had hot dogs and chicken strips.

This is a long way from fine dining but the food is good and it's great fun.

Considering we also drank a pint of Keo, a Cosmopolitan, a Strawberry Smoothie and 4 Cherryades and could hardly move after consuming it all, the 77 Euros bill was excellent value for 7 people.

The service was friendly and efficient, there is plenty of nearby parking and it is air conditioned and is disabled friendly.

an american flop

after a wonderful play session in looney land we decided to try here for dinner, on entering we quickly greeted and was been taken to a table for 3 (myself partner and 14 month old son) to which i said a table for 2 with a highchair might be more suitable!

after seating we were given the menus and then as would become the norm for the evening waited............ drinks were ordered and eventually our meals.

the meals did come fairly quickly (but there was only 2 other tables) my ordered the 1/2 chicken & ribs combo and was given the bbq ribs, i ordered the jambalaya, both dishs were bland to the point of no seasoning let alone taste.

the top rack of ribs was smoothered in bbq sauce while the rack underneath had none.

we were not asked once if our meals were ok, or were we asked if we would like another drink!! and by this stage there was just our table and 1 other and 4 waiting staff plus a bar tender.

we were offered doggy bags for the ribs (portions way to big) which agreed to and had very happy dogs when we returned home.

not somewhere i will be going back to in a hurry let alone recomending to friends.

Mile High Pie stole the show

Sure its pretty new, and still 'sparkling' rather than faded and a little dull like others of this ilk in the town. Comfortable atmosphere, good lighting, great furnishings, interesting decorations and tv/audio set-up - American sports/diner theme. Promptly seated (not many customers) and after a short wait orders taken.

I opted for a crispy chicken salad (€10) plenty of fresh veg. and a good quantity of fried seasoned almost moist breast strips. I have to say this was a big plate of grub, perhaps a little too much honey mustard dressing but devoured without too much trouble. Others on the table had mixed findings, the 'free kids food' didn't appear to be up to much with staling rolls and tough (for kids) hot dogs. However all were bordering on 'stuffed' - big portions seem to be the word in here! Having earned a point with a salad I flexed up for a dessert (to share with my son honest) - the Mile High Pie (€6) duly requested. And what a surprise it was - enough to feed 5 adults and 2 children one regular portion each (!!!), extra plates and spoons later and, yes, it was pretty tasty too. Gobsmacked by the value on the dessert dish, considering the cafe next door had a few crumbs on a plate for about the same price!! Good friendly service throughout.

Between five adults averaged out at €18 including drinks (inc'd paid drinks but free food for two kids) makes for pretty decent value considering portions. All in all certainly interested to go again sooner rather than later.

An American Classic

The two of us visited Yankees last week to see if it was suitable to take 3 of our grandchildren to - it was, so all 7 of us went last night.

This is a typical American restaurant (sports memorabilia, sports car hanging above the bar etc!) but with a lot more on offer. There are numerous television sets (we watched the Murray/Federer Wimbledon final)and it's air conditioned. At first sight the prices appear quite high but, believe me, the portion sizes are large - quite possibly too large. We had made the mistake on our first visit of ordering both starters & a main course! The Avocado & Shrimp rolls and the Crispy Calamari were enormous & that was before our BBQ Chicken & Ribbs and the Blue Burger arrived each with an enormous pile of chips and salad. Luckily they immediately offered us a take home bag for what was left over!

Last night we decided to just have main courses! The children had hot dogs and chips which they thoroughly enjoyed though the hot dog roll was more of a toasted baguette. The four adults had the Old Fashioned Yankee burger, the Fire Burger, the Pulled Pork Sandwich & the Soft Shell Crabs Almonine. The burgers were very good and the crabs in a garlic pasta were very good indeed as was the sandwich though it was more slices of ham rather than 'pulled' pork. Again, apart from the crabs, everything came with piles of chips and salad. The food and drinks menu was very extensive indeed and I may well try a steak next time! My wife loves the cocktails - especially the Cosmopolitan and the ice cream shakes are excellent.

The waiters are very friendly and the facilities - toilets etc - are very good indeed and the whole place is disabled friendly. There is parking outside and another carpark close by. Service was good though with everything cooked to order I suspect it could be rather slow if the place gets very busy.

Our bill came to Euros 95 for 4 adults meals, 3 childrens meals, a beer, 4 lemonades, a thick milk shake, 2 Cosmopolitan cocktails and a large bottle of water. Not bad at all when no-one could manage a single bite more let alone a dessert.

The grandchildren have already decided that their Father's birthday will be celebrated there next week - he didn't get a vote!
