A very enjoyable lunch

We were greeted by the Chef/owner, a larger than life character with a clear passion for his food and ordered the meze. This has fewer dishes than other restaurants offer but that doesn't matter. The food was delicious, home-made and more than enough to eat. It was refreshing to have spices and herbs used so well to create tastes away from the standard fare. We also enjoyed a bottle of Ezousa wine, a winery just down the road from our home. The overall price was a little higher than average and although we used a Daily Deals coupon for this meal it won't stop us returning.

Not That Good

Went last night. Friday 17th October. Not over impressed. No menu and only the meze available. The Owner thinks that his meze is different and it is -- it's not as good as most !

The soup was OK but not liked by my wife. The rest of it was mediocre - fairly poor quality and lots of cheaper cuts and vegs. The main part - the Kleftico was both fatty and cold and the pork skewers were also fatty.

They had some musician playing (in fact he was making a bit of a row !) not very tuneful.

The restaurant was full probably due to all the clients trying it as we did on a daily deal. He won't sustain it for long if you have to pay the real price - imho. Suggest that the owner of this place goes to see how it's done - then tries to replicate it !! Won't be returning in a hurry.

Geoff

Disappointing

We decided to try out Lengo after reading the article on this web site about this cosy taverna and the description of the dishes on offer. I was only for 2 weeks in Paphos, visiting from Belgium, but I am always looking to experience new dishes.

To quote this article, the Meze included dishes such as Pumpkin soup, Cretan Lamb, Kofto Macaronia, Seafood Paella, Baked rabbit, Cuttlefish. The article itself listed 12 separate dishes. Now I realise that a Meze will vary with the ingrdients available and the imagination of the chef. However we did not get a single dish of the aforementioned. What we did get was numbers 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 and 12 (but no bif steakia burger) and a penne pasta. So none of the dishes I was interested was being served. I asked the waiter about whether we would get the Seafood Paella, but he just answered 'no' and walked on.
At some stage the chef came out and sort of asked if everything was ok, but he then answered his own question by saying that as out plates were clean we must have been enjoying the food, after which he immediately left and went to the next table.Like the previous reviewer we also expected that more dishes would be coming.

I can't say that I disliked the food. What was served was ok, but there was nothing special about it. It was basically plain food, reasonably well prepared. I definitely would have liked some more food as the portions were really small and I cannot eat kidneys due to an allergy, so I missed one of the dishes as well.

I would not visit again and I definitely cannot recommend this restaurant. Outside has very little atmosphere as you are basically sitting next to a busy road. I can only say that I am a bit underwhelmed.

Definitely the worst Meze I ever had in Cyprus

I had read quite a few good reviews about this restaurant, so I wanted to try it and invited a friend to join me. It promised an innovative and exciting food choice. However this turned out to be the Worst Meze by far i have ever had in CYprus.

It starts with the usual dips, village salad and bread. Then came some small plates of food containing some stewed vegetables, penne pasta, chicken liver and rice and hallouni and sausage. The protions were ridiculously small. The hallouni was a thinly sliced piece roughly a square inch in size with what I think is a quarter of a sasage (about 2cm = less than an inch). There was nothing wrong with the taste, but also none of the dishes was anything special. The first real meat dish cam and had a small piece of chicken and 2 small pieces of pork per person.

At this moment the chef Petros came out to inquire about teh food and we acknowledged that it was allright thusd far as we expected that now the real main dishes would start to arrive. However that was it. After his visit the waitress came to remove the plates and then served a small piece of a sweet, but bland tasting dessert. I wanted to complain, but my friend told me to just let it go and leave.

I really don't undersatand where the positive reviews for this place come from. Maybe they forgot to serve us half the food, as that is the only explanation I can think of on why there was so little food. Usually Meze's are unfinishable, but on my way home I drove by a Gyros place to ahve a kebab as I was still hungry. Heard later my friend did something similar and had something else to eat when he got home.

At Euro 17 per person this eze is way overpriced. Beer and wine is 3.50 per glass which is a reasonable Restaurant price.

So my conclusion. Definitely don't eat here if you are hungry.

Owner's reply

Am wondering why when the Chef came out and asked you why did’t you ask for more food since you say the food served was not enough. I cannot recall where you were sitting and when you came. As chef and owner I always ask my customers if everything was ok. You said yourself that it was Ok, so I can only think that this critique has a touch of bad intention . It is the first time someone tell that our food was not enough, whenever a customer feels that he did not eat enough we provide him with more food. From your writing I have the feeling that your concept of good food is at least lousy. From the moment you cannot differentiate handmade dips from the usual bucket dips of mass production, when you call oven baked “Briam” vegetable stew and when you expect loads of food at your Meze (“Having a Meze in Cyprus usually means getting loads of food” your own words,) it is clear to me and the readers of this review realize that your culinary taste it does not go further that precooked fish and chips with ketchup.

Respecting the readers of this website and of this review , I can only say that there is only one way to find out if Lengo Tavern is worth Mr “Lovetoeat” review is to make a booking and try us. Nevertheless I would like to thank Mr. “Lovetoeat” for taking the time to rate and review us in more than one web-site. He keeps us in alert. Unfortunately we cannot satisfy all and defiantly we are not going to offer loads of food and throw it way. We believe in sustainable cooking, we cook, we do not open cans or buckets, we peel potatoes and cook them properly, we not warm up precooked fries, we do our houmous and tzantziki, as well as our red wine cooked pasta, we offer a balanced well made meze (the word Meze means degustation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meze ). Once again thank you for your criticism which help us to become better restaurateurs and be able to cater for a more demanding audience.

Absolutey Full of Character

I stopped in here last night to show two new Cyprus visitors something Cypriot, but not 100% village traditional. We enjoyed the passionate explanations of the dishes by the owner Petros, and the dishes themselves were of the best quality, his own ideas from Spain and around Europe, mixed into the traditional meze in taverna setting. Venue has a relaxed, casual ambience with a touch of classic Taverna, but clean and tidy. Allow €18 per person, but you will be very well fed. We washed our meal down with a Ficardos Red, but the taverna stocks many other locally produced wines.
