An undiscovered gem

The traditional Cypriot barbecue so often means a selection of dry and overcooked meats of indeterminate origin, but here the food is prepared with altogether more care, by a very experienced chef.

Three of our small party were tempted by the mixed grill, which arrived on a large platter and included lamb chops, spare ribs, succulent cubes of pork, moist chicken breast, halloumi and smoked sausage - fried eggs would have enhanced it, and I would rather have had liver than the sausage, but I am certain Stavros would have delivered had we thought about it earlier.

On reflection, if you have salad and dips for a starter, the mixed grill is essentially a meat meze with all the dishes served at the same time, rather than drip fed over the evening.

Our fourth member had chicken a la creme, which as the name implies is chicken in a creamy sauce with mushrooms, and short work was made of it :)

You won't find frozen chips or vegetables here (we had carrots which were perfectly cooked).

Stavros the proprietor is frankly mad and has an excellent rapport with his customers, keeping us laughing throughout the meal which was just the lift we needed after a rather depressing week.

It was rather quiet on the (Friday) night we attended and most of the other diners were Cypriot, which meant smoking at the table - which is the only real downside about the place.

We left happy and stuffed with a total bill for four of £46 including gratuities. You can't ask for more than that ... apart from asking the smokers to eat outside ;)
