Consistently better than pub grub

Whilst variety maybe the spice of life, consistency has its place also, and glad to say that despite not visiting for half a year, the New Horizon haskept everything that made me a regular there - everything mentioned in my previous review from a couple of years back remains valid ! This visit I stopped in for lunch, and again, my favoured House Special salad was freshly prepared and arrived promptly, set me back circa €10 with a bottle of water, and I was very satisfied. Friendly landlord Stephanos is in the middle of introducing some interesting new menu items to complement his customers existing favourites, and I expect he will continue to build on previous years success of providing a friendly pub atmosphere, with some 'gastro pub' menu items.

better than 'pub grub'

Been in here quite a few times over the last 6 months, seen plenty of good plates get walked by, certainly better than expected 'for a pub'. Last time down there i had House Special salad (€9) nice selection of fresh vegetables & greens, succulent & well seasoed chicken breast with a indifferent slice of lounza, honey and mustard dressing given in a pot on the side to add to my taste rather than over applied as often the case in most places. The place is well furnished, classic wood affect style from England, well equipped for the sports fan with a plethora of screens showing popular events as and when. Pub landlord nearly always working the bar, more than ably assisted by familiar face bar staff, for me, shows a dedication to the cause, reflected in the prompt & polite service. Its a good British pub style venue, with better than expected selection of freshly prepared good food.

Okay

Basically a bar that does food. Good if you want to watch football as they seem to show all the Premiership games. Food is okay if you just want a snack type meal. Would not recommend it for anything more. Has reduced prices on drinks this year and seems to be one price for all beers and cocktails. Not the cheapest around but at least you know what you will be paying before you sit down. I like this place and it can have a good atmosphere in the evenings.

Don't bother!

Met a friend here today for a late breakfast. Coffee was very very bitter. Hot but needed three sugars to bring it to something nearly palatable. Waitress was very hit and miss- fast to bring first coffee, slow to bring menu then back almost straight away asking if we wanted to order. When we did finish looking at the menu, she was nowhere to be found. Friend had the pork chops, I had the 'New Horizon Breakfast' (or something like that). Took nearly half an hour to arrive at table (not that we minded so much as we were catching up on news and gossip). Pork chop plate- okay, but chips were frozen rather than fresh (and we both could remember proper chips from here which was strange), veg was microwaved (broccoli was wrinkly from incorrect reheating) and the pork chop was not cooked next to the bone. Breakfast plate- beans salty, sausage bearable, bacon fatty, halloumi chewy (over excessive use of the heat lamps I think!), toast barely toasted and going stale (cold seems normal for toast locally) and the eggs... well, crunchy white round the edges and still RAW next to the yolk. I wrote a very rude word on my plate in ketchup.Waitress told me that she had only been there one month and the breakfasts were better somewhere else (and yes we will be going there rather than returning to the New Horizon). She told me where the manager was but did not offer to fetch him and we still had to pay for the food. Very very disappointed. It cost €24.05 for pork chop and chips, breakfast and two large and one small coffee. No tip left.

Constructive criticism? Learn how to cook a fried egg properly- start by frying at a lower temperature! Oh, and use a heat probe (like you should be under the HACCP standards to check that meat is cooked properly before serving to customers. I don't think it is BEST FOR anything but I had to select one of the values to enter this review!

New Horizon

Recently visited the New Horizon to sample the curry night, which includes a pint of local beer, there is a limited selection of basic dishes. Poppadoms & dips are served as starters; I had chicken madras which was alright, but certainly not in the Poppadums league, the restaurant across the road. The rest of the group were decidedly underwealmed by their meals. Cost with a couple more drinks came to €30 each, which I guess for a tourist location is to be expected, but for what we had was considered a lot.

The place is a sports type bar, which unfortunately seems to mean football on multiscreens, with deafening sound levels which are not conducive to conversation.
