Real Asian Food

We decided to eat at Hugo's last week as they don't have a TV and we wouldn't be subjected to the football! The restaurant was obviously quiet which suited us. We chose 6 or 7 tapas to share and loved them all. Asian beer choices were limited but nice to have a couple of Asahi beers.
No hesitation in going back, again and again...

A mixed bag, orignial but with weaknesses

Hugos does Asian Tapas which is something I find is very original. I love Tapas and I love Asian food, so a combination of the 2 sounded like heaven to me. There is a lot of good things one can say about this restaurant. However there are also some weak points.

First big negative: THIS RESTAURANT DOES NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS !!!!!!

The location on the main road is definitely not fantastic (second big negative). The food was overall good. The Fish cakes are wonderful, I liked the lamb curry, the Tiger Prawns and teh satay. The duck pancakes were disappointing as the duck was not crispy, there were no spring onions and the hoi-sin sauce was sprinkled over them rather than inside which made it difficult to eat them in the proper way (with the hands).

If you are a big eater this is a relatively expensive restaurant as you will need to order at least 3 or 4 dishes per person and with dessert that makes it close to 30 Euro per person excluding drinks. So count on 75 to 100 Euro for 2 people. If you are small eaters you can probably get away with about 60 Euro for the two.

They have a nice wine menu, but I would have preferred some more good local wines as the selection of Cyprus wines is really poor.

What I loved the best about the restaurant is that you can order different dishes throughout the night and that the food is more spicy than usual in Cyprus. However you can have a better Indian meal for half the price 50 metres down the road .

As a summary: Great spicy food, but bring Cash !!

Mixed feelings

This was a particularly difficult restaurant to review not least since a Thai Tapas restaurant is not one we'd come across before. Three of my party were less than impressed whilst one of us liked it!

Being on a main road up from St Georges the traffic can be a bit noisy.
We hadn't booked but there were only four other tables taken so it wasn't a problem. I'm presuming that as this is a very new restaurant the owner is not yet able to anticipate how many customers he will get in on a week night and is keeping costs low by having only one waiter. Whilst understandable this made the service rather slow and unpredictable. All of this reduced the atmosphere/ambience of the place.

The format is an unusual one in that in place of starters/main courses there are quite a number of small (but varied and interesting) dishes to choose from. I would suggest a little more information/guidance is required on the menu for customers to understand what exactly to expect. Some of the choices can, for instance, also be had as main courses which led to some confusion as to how they should be ordered at the same time as the tapas dishes!

The dishes ranged from Thai Curry, Tempura vegetables, seared salmon, chicken skewers and fish cakes to duck curry, lamb poppadoms and beef fillet skewers. All of the ingredients were fresh, well cooked and well presented - the intracately carved vegetable decorations were clever and edible!

There appeared to be a good wine list though our first choice was not available. The dessert trolley was good -tiramisu, profiteroles, chocolate 'mud' tarts, cheesecake etc.

All in all the food was good and represented good value but Hugo's is let down by a number of other aspects. Time will tell if/how Hugo changes his menu as it may be that return customers will be limited if they have tried a good percentage of the offerings on their first visit.

As I said earlier three of my party wouldn't go back but one would. The one thing we did all agree on, however, was that the Thai chicken curry was excellent and left a very pleasant tingle in the mouth! Well worth ordering as a main course.

Hugo's

Ate there on Friday night, didn't bother to book as it had seemed quiet the last few times we had passed, big mistake very busy with only a couple of spare tables. The staff were very plesant and helpful suggesting we order 3 or 4 dishes then we could add to them if we felt we wanted more, in the end we had 5 courses of well cooked and well presented food which come to Euro 25.60 non of the dishes looked a lot but in total plenty for two hungry diners. For drinks we had 1 G&T 1 Large KEO and a bottle of very good Austrailian red, total bill 49.65.Would certainly recommend Hugo's.

Something new in food

Just getting on the eating map, so needs more customers then the atmosphere will be great.
Went there with friends and had at least 7 courses and 3 bottles of wine all under €100. The food was exciting and to quote one of our guests 'the Thai Curry was as good as being in Thailand' Well worth a try.
We have been twice now and its gets better each time. Hugo the owner is open to suggestions and is so interested in Thai food having lived there for 15 years.
