Good hearty fare

We've been using Famagusta over the 9 years we've been visiting Paphos, and have always liked it for consistently hearty fare, you know what you're getting and in the main it doesn't disappoint. The chips are the best! The suckling pig, kleftico and stifado - meat just fell apart and was so tender, just sorry didn't make the barbecue night on the Friday this time. The atmosphere is good when there are several tables occupied, and inside it feels like a traditional taverna, very cosy, and there always seems to be a table of local Cypriots dining there which is always a recommendation. Just a shame this year that there weren't so many diners about.

Famagusta Tavern

The Famagusta Tavern is a delight in my home town of Chloraka. Vassos the owner and his wife make a great team. On busy nights their family members help out. The food is very well cooked and all homemade. The stifados is especially tasty and one of the best I have had on the island. Tuesday nights there is suckling pig and Fridays there is the barbecue night. Try it out. I have been made to feel warmly welcome on every visit.

Solid place

This is a village tavern, but the décor and service are one up from the normal ones. ItÂ’s really good for large parties of people and Vassos, the owner, is very adaptable. His son now works there and is just like his father, most of the staff have been there for years so the service is very good. We have had parties of 10 and more without booking, but I would ring them first anyway. They now have an outside eating area, which in the summer it is nice to sit and watch things going on in the village. It's very popular with Cypriots, so you can be outnumbered sometimes, but we take it as a mark of good food. The Mousakka is in individual dishes and really tasty, the meze is good, he doesn't do a fish one, just meat, but he does take enough time with his meze's so that they are enjoyable. My favourite is Gammon in an orange sauce, which sounds odd, but it really works well. All in all, it's one of the places to go where you know you will always get a good meal with reasonably priced drinks, nothing particularly outstanding, but decent good food at sensible prices.

not great really..

how disappointing. Our nearest taverna and the meal wasn't that great. Restaurant empty apart from a group at the garden end. staff seemed friendly but meal was too rushed. The tzatziki/halloumi were lovely for starters but the moussaka was stodgy, solid and dry. The bolognaise lasagne was similar to a findus frozen meal. Neither of us finished our meals.cost £17 for meal, starter and 2 beers. On the plus side they do Leon beer and the jasmine fragrance from the roadside plants was lovely.

Good value - better service

Friends had kept telling us to try this restaurant, and we were not disappointed - despite the inconsiderate smokers on the next table :(

The food was not extraordinarily special, but it was good wholesome fare and eagerly consumed. The mushroom soup was especially nice, but my liver was overcooked and the chips somewhat anaemic looking, but it was tasty, the vegetables fresh and the portions ample. Personally I would prefer restaurants to use frozen chips when the local potatoes are not suitable for chips - and these weren't.

Other members of our party made short work of a vegetarian lasagne, moussaka and kleftiko. The kleftiko was said to be the best my friend had tasted and was served with baked potato, rice and vegetables. The portion was certainly generous and fat free.

Desserts were unadventurous, but the baklava was served hot (OK warm), apparently home made, and accompanied by a minuscule portion of ice cream. My wife's fruit salad again with the tiny blob of ice cream, was well received.

The service was outstanding, attentive, without being in your face, and the owner was clearly eager to please.

The bill for four with drinks (I was driving so had a large Cyprus '??????' coffee) came out at a few coppers over £10 a head, which seemed entirely appropriate.

Next time - and there will be a next time - I will ask him not to overcook the liver ;)
