Much better than visit in 2010

We’d eaten here some years back and had a less than great meal (see earlier review)– but not one so bad that we’d “never darken their doorstep again”. I have a sense that the menu has changed since then. Certainly, it's now pretty much exclusively Cypriot with a large “build your own meze” listing of dishes in the €3 – 5 range. From this we took an aubergine dip, some green olives and koupes (bulgher and lamb croquettes like the Lebanese kibbeh I’m more familiar with).

For main courses, a vegetable moussaka was well made with a tasty béchamel sauce. Inherently a bit sloppy, the accompanying salad gave a welcome contrasting crispness. The other dish was afelia which comes with just a little of the wine and coriander sauce clinging to the meat – in truth, it meant it was a bit dry and would have benefitted from a drop more sauce. It came with roast spuds and mixed veg.

For dessert, baklava and ice cream was fine, if an unthrilling example. My companion in life’s eye had been caught by the “traditional Cypriot preserves”. The waiter explained there were several options and walnut was picked. It comes as a single walnut, with the texture similar to a British pickled walnut but preserved in sweet syrup, rather than vinegar. Tastes really good.

LONG TIME NO VISIT

I/We used to go there frequently with friends, not been back since I became a widower, till now.We found steaks and avocado starters the best deal, we were not that impressed with meze whether fish or meat, there are better in Paphos for less. The brothers and uncle that used to run the place have moved on, and now more a tourist place, as I am sure it has always been.I would go back and take guests but would not place it in my top 10,

Not as good as other meze places we tried

We had four meze meals during our two weeks in Paphos. This one was the least good. There was just something about the cooking and presentation that made it miss the mark. It was a feeling that, much more than the other places, jars had been opened rather than the dishes freshly prepared in the kitchen. It was about using less good quality ingredients. It was about less care in the kitchen with the stew type dishes not cooked for long enough so being chewy. And the grilled meats being overcooked and a bit dry.

Of course, that`s not to say that it was awful. It wasn`t and, at the general “going rate” for mezes at around €17, this was on the money. There was a wide selection fo dishes and, even though it was a meat meze, it included some good squid rings and a crisply fried whole sardine each. Amongst the grilled meats, there was quail and a really tasty sheftalia - tasty once you`d cut away the burnt bits that is.

A matter of personal preference I accept, but we didn`t particularly like the style of service. With the other meals, we`d started with a selection of dips or other cold items and then other dishes would arrive in ones or twos as they prepared. At Mandra, everything was served as four almost traditional courses. It just didn`t feel like a “real meze” if you see what I mean.

Not a place we`d rush back to if we visit Paphos again.

The best meze in Paphos

Mandra Tavern on Dionysiou Street, the side road off Bar Street by Demokritos, is our favourite overall Cypriot restaurant, excellent service from Stelios and his son Greg in lovely surroundings.

After many visits over the years we have worked our way through many of the dishes on the extensive menu, but our overall favourite is the meze, which at 17 Euros is excellent value. I haven't found anywhere else that offers such a variety of dishes.

We like the place so much that when we got married in Paphos 5 years ago, we had our wedding reception here.

Well worth a visit or two!

We had seen the website before travelling to Paphos and were impressed so we decided to eat here on our first night. We loved the beautiful setting and the food and found the service really good too. Their special reserve red wine at 10 pounds a bottle was excellent. I had the "Mussels a la Mandra" starter. It had the most fantastic sauce which went very well with the warm pitta bread which was served. My husband had the calamari which he declared to be very good indeed. For main course we had the lamb kleftico and the beef stifado and these were as good as any we have tasted on our many visits to the Greek Islands. We enjoyed the meal so much that we chose to go back on the last evening. Only the frozen vegetables prevent a ten rating for the food but there was so much meat this did not worry us unduly. Highly recommended!
