The Customer is always wrong! - La Place Royale

Previously only ever called here for a coffee and it is a great place for people watching.
Decided to try the set menu for a remarkable 9.90 euros, and did not have massively high expectations for the low price.
ordered a very retro meal of prawn cocktail and a beef stroganoff. the prawn cocktail was passable, but we waited over 50 minutes for our main course. Other half was waiting to watch the rugby league up at the keg & barrel, so was anxious, and we asked the maitre D how much longer the food would be.
There seemeed to be sufficient numbers of waiting staff in, and the restaurant was vety quiet as it was early. 10 minutes later the food arrived, 2 beef stroganoffs, we were asked who wanted the jacket potatoes and who wanted the chips, but neither of us were asked at the point of order? The stroganoff was the worst I have ever tasted, it had plenty of meat ( I didnt expect fillet steak!) some was ham, 3 very small pieces of mushroom, no evidence of any cream or alcohol, just a tasteless over salted stew. The water from the tinned sweetcorn was oozing into the sauce. For once i was unable to eat very much, and the waitress asked if we did not like the food? I told her that I didnt like it, and it did not seem to be beef stroganoff. When the maitre D brought the bill, he asked if everything was ok, so I said that the stroganoff was not very good.
He proceeded to tell me that beef stroganoff was not the same in Cyprus as England, and in fact despite the name , it was made with pork, he more or less said that I did not know what a beef stroganoff was like in Cyprus. I countered this by saying I had had beef stroganoff just up the road at Flambemaster, and it was delicious.
The maitre D then changed tack and said, well if you had asked me what was good on the menu I would have told you what was good! Implying he knew the stroganoff was poor! Gobsmacked to say the least - no apology was made. Yes it was cheap, but just a wasted evening of our holiday, we won't be returning.
If you do decide to try it I would stick to something plain like the pork chop, can you go wrong with a pork chop?
Can't comment on dessert, I didnt have the inclination by this point

What a disappointment!

We called in last Friday evening about 9pm. Two of the party ordered moussaka and had to send it back because it was cold. Fresh plates of hot food were duly returned but the food was so tasteless and stodgy, they couldn't eat it. Another of our party ordered chicken in pitta bread. The best thing about it was the pitta. The chicken had bones in it, which made biting into the sandwich somewhat hazardous.

The drinks were expensive! The staff were indifferent.

We will not be returning.

I've had the chop!

That's the BIG pork chop, not a vasec......

Anyway, food and service very good.

We had a table at the edge and, as stated earlier, it is an excellent vantage point for people watching, one of our favourite activities whilst on holiday.

Only been once [up to now, but will be back].

Great value

The elevated position makes it a great place to people watch, the cooked breakfasts are great value, and they do an enormous pork chop, to see it is to believe it. Also a good place for coffee and snacks

Staff arefriendly, service was good, and you get a discount card for your next visit
