Expensive wine

Went to hondros for Sunday lunch
I had chicken & pork souvlaki that came with three roast potatoes , price was 14 euros
My husband had a large village salad, two dips and a portion of chips
The dips are homemade , salad was well salad... But nice and fresh. Souvlaki was well cooked ,the roast potatoes were ok but not as crispy as I would have liked ( have yet to find a Cypriot taverna that gets them right ) but were acceptable.
My main problem with this taverna was the price of the wine. After a quick glance at the menu I ordered what I thought to be a carafe of wine
When it came it was half a carafe . I do think eight euro fifty cents is very expensive for a half carafe of wine in a taverna.

My husband did complain to the waitress that he thought eight euro fifty was a bit steep for half carafe but her reaction was to give him a steely stare then went on to try and bullshit us that it was " special wine " produced by aunty & uncle whoever !
Lesson learned always read the small print .

glad to have tried

Initial concerns from the reviews on this site were quickly evaporated after great friendly welcome, followed yp by excellent chicken souvla and fresh village salad, with water for approximately €15/pp. A good, well furnished venue, relaxed atmosphere assited by the talented acoustic guitarist providing laid back tunes.

Poor

Somewhere that advertises itself as Paphos` oldest traditional restaurant should have had plenty of time to get it right. Unfortunately, it doesn`t.

Kleftiko was a success for quantity over good cooking. The meat managed to be both quite fatty (to be expected with shoulder) yet very dry and underflavoured (not to be expected). Veg - courgette, cauliflower, corn and carrot - were plentiful but the first two were cooked to a mush. Not often you can say a baked potato was the tastiest thing on the plate - but here it was.

Across the table, fillet steak lacked any real flavour or juiciness, yet had only been cooked to the requested medium. Good chips, though. My partner followed this with fresh fruit - apple, orange and banana. So, nothing obviously local or seasonal there.

Baklava was also disappointing - tasting just of “sweet”.

Service had been good. The inevitable cats had been very cute. Bill, including for a half litre of house red and a bottle of water was just on €55. Let`s just say this wasn`t the bargain of a lifetime.

Very disappointing

My partner and I were visiting his aunt who lives in Cyprus. I know October isn't in season, but it wasn't completely dead. Overall look was nice, very traditional Cypriot Tavern with vine leaves making part of roof. My partners aunt had told us we needed to have meze on our last night in Cyprus, so we decided to try there. They had heard good things in the past, but thinking back, it might have been about a year ago.

We ordered the meat meze for four people, 18.95 euros each. Quite expensive, but we expected good things as it was being advertising in guide books and even on the tourist map. Due to the choice you normally get in a meze, my partners aunt telling us to pace our food because of how much we got. We ate slowly through the dips, salad and other little starters. Bean thing was bit plain, humous was a bit thin, spicy cheese wasn't spicy or cheesy was actually quite powdery, but overall, not bad. Main dishes were Sheftalia, Keftedes, Souvlakia and chips: the souvlakia was a bit burnt, but ok. We had asked one of the waitresses that we wanted food to come out slowly, so when we hadn't been given any food for a while we thought they were complying.

We were slowly picking at dishes when waiter asked if we were finished and to clear plates. We said we were still picking. 10minutes later, we decided to ask a waitress if that was it for the meze, and she went to ask the chef. She came back to say we would be getting stifado. So no main courses for 10minutes until we asked, then the waiter came and took the plates away. Once he had done that, he was told by the waitress we were getting stifado, so he had to bring us all small clean plates, and then another salad to eat with the stifado.

After all we'd been told about how great mezes are, and we got jipped. We only got the stifado because we basically asked, and no fruit or dessert at all. With 2 alcoholic drinks and 3 bottles of water, cost was just over 95 euros. Complete rip off.

There was a family of cats, kittens and 2 pregnant cats while we were there. I thought that was the nicest bit about the place as I was leaving.
