Well worth a visit

We visited Gabor on their last night before closing, I have rated the service as 8 despite the three courses taking almost three hours. Apparently the Chef got one of our meals mixed up with another table and therefore chose to prepare all 5 again instead of one of us waiting.

The food was excellent value at €17.90 for the set menu and of a very high quality.

Gabors will be re-opening again at the end of February 2012 and we will be going back.

Gabor above the rest

Great central location, pleasant in all aspects, worth a visit and revisit, will do so again soon.
Service, food and drink all great value. The set menu even at €17.50 is well worth trying and of a higher level than many eateries on their a la carte.

Gabors - A great experience almost!

I love Gabors, the presentation of the meals to Voila is rather cheesy, but the restaurant feels a lot classier than your average tourist place.
There is a good choice of dishes. I chose a stuffed chicken breast for the main course, which was very nice, however it was secured with an invisible piece of dried spaghetti that I bit into unwittingly and chipped a tooth, so not a great experience.
My husband had the 70's classic steak Diane which was cooked to perfection
There is a great value set menu which i think was 17 euros for 3 courses, however we strayed to the a la carte, the meal was around 60 euros but we had a bottle of wine 2 courses each and a coffee

Not worth the hype

So, here you are. A restaurant purporting to be a good French one that probably wouldn`t last 5 minutes in France. It could, so easily, be a stand-out restaurant in the Paphos area. But, for that, it`d have to concentrate on getting the basics of cooking and service right, instead of messing about with pretentious tourist fripperies. By getting the basics right, I mean things like producing menus in a reasonable time and getting the standard of cooking in line with the prices. By fripperies, I mean things like pouring indifferent bottles of wine into decanters and serving their cheap freebie brandy in candle-warmed glasses.

As to the food, the menu runs through a number of classic French dishes - frogs legs, for instance - and a number of more international ones gussied up with French names.

A starter of salmon mousse was light and fishy and surrounded by a sour cream sauce. Perfectly OK.

Melon with port is another usually light starter. Here it was miserly in the extreme. Usually half a melon filled with port is served. Here three thin slices of melon sat on the plate, surrounded by what was surely watered down port. And for that they charge an outrageous €6. There`s a phrase that comes to mind that sounds very like “taking the hiss”

Rack of lamb was a generous portion of eight tiny cutlets. Cooked to what the restaurant probably perceives as British tastes, it was well past “medium”. And, keeping to its apparent British theme, it was served with an odd mint flavoured gravy.

It`s not that they instinctively overcook meat. The other main was a perfectly pink duck breast. Good flavour. Sauce was disappointing - described as “peach, mandarin and ginger”, a better description would have been “tinned peach, overly sweet mandarin and non-existent ginger”. Not nice.

Veg, served separately, were good. Carrots, cabbage & raisins, cauliflower - all cooked till just tender, yet retaining a crispness. Good roast potatoes.

We`d fancied dessert but, as having waited overly long for orders to be taken (when menus had finally arrived), and waited too long for each course to arrive, it came as no surprise that no menus were presented after the main course plates were cleared away. Eventually we gave up and tried to attract someone`s attention to get the bill. Of course, it took ages even though Gabor has loads of staff - they were all busy lifting metal domes off plates, lighting candles under brandy glasses and other such tosh.

Bill, including for an aperitif, half bottle of very decent Paphos Cabernet Sauvignon and a bottle of water was €65. We didn`t feel this was at all good value but perhaps the set menu at around €18 would have been a better bet than the carte. We`d have still been irritated by all the unnecessary poncing around that passes for service here. Places like this give fine dining a bad reputation.

Not so Good This time

We eat here last year and the food was good.
This time the food was average, better than some. The steak was over cooked and the flavours were not that exciting to what we were expecting.
I think if you don`t have wine you don`t get an attentive service, this is compared to last time.

My have been unluckly this time.
