Still one of the best for a great steak

I visit the restaurant at least once or twice a year as it never disappoints. The Flambe being prepared at your table is a nice entertaining thing to do. The meat here is the most succulent you'll ever taste and they always seem to get it right. Medium rare is truly medium rare. The sauces are wonderful and the chef lets you choose how strong or spicy you want everything. My favorite is the 'Kerry Special', but also the Steak Diane, Pork Singapore or Stroganoff are wonderful. I have tried and loved each and every Flambe item on the menu. Everything comes with vegetables, rice, chips or baked potatoes. They will always bring you extra potato or vegetable if you ask.
The flambés are priced from 16 to 22 Euro. A nice bottle of wine is about 15 Euro.
The Flambes are quite filling. I never order a starter here because to be honest even though there is reasonable choice (prawn cocktail, Halloumi etc.) there is nothing really on the menu that excites me. This part of the menu really deserves an update.
Otherwise I highly recommend this restaurant. You will not be disappointed. However not a great place for vegetarians.,

Back to the Sixties

We were staying at the Almyra Hotel and wandered across the road to Flambe.

We had eaten there 3/4 years ago - it had not really changed that much.

The restaurant was only quarter full even on a Saturday night. We ordered a large carafe of local wine which was fine. My wife had Kalamare and I had the Garlic Mushrooms for starters. My wife chose a Pepper Steak and I had Steak Dianne both of which were cooked at the table buy the Owner and his Bulgarian Waitress. Superbly cooked just how we liked it - lots of flames and drama (just as I remember it it the 60's)
The service was excellant - the owner was very pleasant and his two Bulgarian Waitresses very attentive - he told us that the Hotels offering 'all inclusive' had killed his trade when we told him how busy he was on our last visit.

We had no room for sweets but ordered filter coffee which was ok. Were were offerred Brandy (a huge glass full) with our coffee. When we told the Waitress that we could walk home she gave us more Brandy and left the bottle on the table for us to help ourselves !!

The bill was 70 euros - not cheap but it's right in the Tourist area and was not too bad for what we ate.

Would recommend for a special treat - especially if you remember this style of cooking from restaurants in the 60's.

Geoff

A pleasant surprise

Delicious fillet steak Flambe'd before your eyes as the veg is cooked backstage to arrive with military timing. Also served on hot plates which is a rare thing in paphos. Staff were diligant and courteous. All in a great meal which I have to admit surprised me. Will definately be back

Show time!

Accurately described by the previous reviewer (harters), so wll not repeat it.
But, where else would you find the Owner sitting down with his mates on one of the restaurant's tables when the place is almost full for a backgammon tourny? and yes, when it gets a little hot, by all means, he would jump to assist with the show. Makes it type of a friendly informal atmosphere. As to foods? overall, a nice time out but the sauce does dominate the taste so not much left for the beef fillet. But then again, this is their specialty and this is what they've been doing (successfully) for many years.

Food from 30 years ago

Er, they do flambé. Something you don`t see too often these days.

I had a Steak Diane - and I can`t remember when I last saw that on a menu. 20 or 30 years ago, perhaps? At tableside, they cook finely diced onion, mushroom and garlic till they`ve softened. Then the fillet steak goes in. They say it`s fillet steak and I suppose it`s possible - but it didn`t look like fillet. Cooked to medium rare, it still tasted pretty good, although all the other stuff in the pan meant it was impossible to get a good char on the meat. Some Worcestershire sauce and wine went in and a “secret ingredient” - it looked like a butter/flour mix to thicken the sauce. And then a good splash of brandy and WHOOSH. The still flaming steak is transferred to your plate (I thought I recalled from all those years ago, that you don`t serve it till the flames have died down so the alcohol has burned off). The onion/mushroom/garlic sauce mix is then put on top of and around the steak. Veg & chips are served separately.

At the same time, another 80`s classic of peppered steak was being prepared in in much the same way. The sauce almost identical to the Diane sauce with the addition of green peppers and goodly helping of peppercorns.

In truth, there was too much of the sauce on both plates and it tended to overwhelm the taste of the meat. A case of “less is more”, we thought. Easy to scrape much of it to the side of the plate, though.

We both had peach melba as dessert which was as you`d expect of yet another classic - tinned peach, some ice cream and lots of canned “squirty” cream. Finally, a Greek coffee.

Bill was €71 which included for an aperitif, half bottle of their cheapest red wine and a bottle of water. You`re paying something of a premium price here. But you`re getting the showmanship in return. And memories of those classic dishes from your youth. Whether it`s worth the money is a moot point.
