Demokritos Taverna Paphos

I am prompted to review this fine establishment because firstly, it is fine and secondly because of the down right lies written about the establishment by visitors to the restaurant.
This is a family run business that has been going for many years than I can remember. I am a personal friend of the family and consider this restaurant to offer an exceptional range of fine Cypriot food. Some of the best in Paphos. The trouble with many tourists is that they don't really want the authenticity that this place gives in bucket loads. Those people should stay in their hotels and eat chips and beans and not be allowed to comment.
Paphos has undergone a dramatic transformation due to the type of clientele now visiting. This change has developed to keep pace with what these bucket and spade brigade demand.
Demokritos Restaurant is authentic and has held on to its traditions, where many others have altered their approach to suit the afore mentioned persons. Well Done Demokritos.
If anyone wants a truely authentic evening with dancing, good food and atmosphere then get along to Demokritos. I have been doing so for the past 15 years and now live on the island. To all those who don't like this restaurant, you probably dont like Cyprus either!

Disappointing

Took my niece here for a meal as she wanted to see the greek dancing and try some Cypriot food.As a nice touch we were presented with warm pitta bread and dips to start. I ordered Cpriot dips as a starter and had the worst taramasalata I have ever tastyed. It was so bland that it could have been anything! My neice had dolmades and they were also extremelt bland with not a hint or taste other than rice in them. She was very disappointed.I then had moussaka which was passable and she had beef in creamy sauce which she said was delicious and cooked just pink in the middle. The main courses were served with a salad/vtinned veg and chips. The chips were lovely-home cooked but the veg was obviously either tinned or extremely overcooked.we then had icecream and tiramisu to finish. My set meal was €8 and my nieces was €9.50 we also had a carafe of wine for €10.50.Overall the price was good but we were disappointed with some of the food. The greek dancing was a little boring but they were very good with a hen party that was in and got the bride to be up dancing without being smutty or 'hand on' as I have seen in some places.

A ruined evening

My wife and I were married in Paphos in May and we wanted to take all of our guests out for a meal on the last night of our stay. As some of our guests wanted to see some Greek dancing and we needed a large venue, we chose Demokritos for our meal.

It was a disaster from start to finish. Many of our guests were not even asked if they would like a drink and had to ask repeatedly to get one. Two of the guests had microwaved food that was cold in the middle. Some of our guests' orders were simply ignored and they had no food until after everybody else. Many people were given the wrong food and the food that was provided was, at best, mediocre.

When we complained we were told they were short-staffed, but no apology or recompense was offered. As the evening progressed the whole event descended into a farce with multiple staff members taking dessert orders and then failing to provide the correct dessert. Staff would simply ignore us so we couldn't order drinks or get mistakes corrected (of which there were many).

In the end everybody wanted to walk out, so we asked to see the manager, who played a game of hide-and-seek with us, avoiding dealing with the problem. My wife and I had to go to the till to corner somebody so we could complain about the fiasco but there we were met with rudeness and abuse from the lady on the till. They did, in the end, give us a token discount to compensate us for the pitiful level of service but this was nowhere near enough to make up for a ruined evening.

We have spent a lot of time in Paphos, and eaten in many restaurants here, and this is the first time we have been treated in this way. We would not recommend this restaurant to anybody.
