Be there or be square

Ate here on the last night of our holiday. Wished we'd found it sooner. The set menu is €14 and was great value. The Halibut was delicious. We had 6 kids with us and they were well catered for and looked after. Service was very good and prompt. The outside terrace with the church in tge background made for a lovely setting. Great views over Paphos too.

The Square Tala - Dissapointing

6 of us and two babies dined here last night and were extremely dissapointed. After we sat down it was 25 minutes before we were offered a drink, which although annoying we could see they were busy so let it go without making a fuss.Once we had ordered our meals we were very well entertained by the singer who was excellent,he interacted with the customers well and made us feel very comfortable.
The problem was we then waited 50 minutes for our starters, during this time we were not offered any more drinks or even spoken to by a waitress which was quite annoying, when our starters arrived to be fair they were very nice,i had the bacon and garlic mushrooms on toast and it was lovely, another of our party had prawn wonton and that also was hard to find fault with. The childs pasta we had ordered to come out as soon as possible still had not arrived however. After our plates had been cleared we then waited another 45 minutes for our main courses,by this point the children were tired and we were all getting a bit restless. When my wife asked how much longer our meals would be she was shouted at by the manager "ITS ON THE PLATE".So 10 minutes later our meals eventually arrived, and again the food was actually very good.I had a ribeye steak with port and stilton sauce and it was superb, although the two mushrooms served with it were deep fried and therefore full of grease,it also came with the dreaded multi-coloured peas that had obviously been sat in hot water all night.Someone else had the Halibut which got good comments,my wife had the half duck which was very dry and tasted deep fried. The childs pasta we had ordered nearly 2 hours ago by this point didnt arrive at all.
By this point we had had enough,it was nearly 10.30 and our children were very tired so my wife went and asked for the bill. When the waitress asked the manager/owner for the bill for our table he said rather loudly "THANK GOD" as if he couldnt wait for us to leave. He also tried to charge us 6 euros for the childs pasta that never made it to the table.
All in all it was a very dissapointing night, but did have some plus points. Some of the food was excellent, some of it very poor. The service was dreadfull and the manager/owner rather rude.with a few more members of staff and maybe an extra chef in the kitchin it could be a very nice place to go.Unfortunatly i dont think we will be going back in a hurry.

Excellent food

Four of us dined here last night on a recommendation. I have to say it was lovely. We all had the 15 euro 3 course meal. The menu for this was quite extensive. For starters we had wonton prawns, vegetable soup and chicken pate, none of which we could reasonably find fault with. Generous sized portions, well presented.
Main courses were fish and chips, lasagne with garlic bread & pork stir fry. Again, large well presented portions, very tasty, my lasagne was gorgeous!. Desserts were again very tasty, treacle tart with ice cream, ice cream sundaes and they were largte portions. Many other choices on the menu, and also a good a la carte menu.
Wines were reasonably priced with a litre of village wine at 11.50 if I recall correctly. We had a lovely evening, with good fod and its a pleasant place to sit, especially in summer when you can sit outside nd people watch. The only slight complaint was the lighting inside, it was very harsh and needed softening. Apart form that, highly recommend it, will go again soon.

The Square Tala

We ate here quite a few times in summer 2008 and the quality of the food was one of the reasons that we returned to Cyprus again this summer but unfortunately Ray and Sandra have sold up and whilst the food was quite good it wasn't to the exceptional standards of last year

Pleasant evening

The 3 course Fixed Price menu + 'specials' is written up on the blackboard so no menu to peruse - not sure if it always like that. We hadn't realised when we booked that there was no 'a la carte' availability. Nevertheless it was excellent value at Euros 15 ph. The bream (a 'special') was cooked beautifully. The views are excellent but the restaurant room itself is a bit bland. We went on a Saturday night and there was a male vocalist which might normally have put us off but he was actually very good. All in all a very pleasant evening.
